The reason duplex stainless steels are so-called is that they have a two-phase microstructure made up of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel grains. It transforms from a liquid to a totally ferritic structure during melting. Most of the ferritic grains change to austenitic grains as the material cools to room temperature, roughly half of them. The outcome is a microstructure that is around 50% ferrite and 50% austenite.
